STOCKTON - Don Norton is one win away from his best season yet.
His
Stagg High football team beat Bear Creek 39-7 on Friday night at
Podesto Field, putting the Delta Kings at 4-0 on the year. Norton, in
his fifth year coaching Stagg, tied his most wins in a season, going
4-6 the previous two years.
"I'm not excited
for me," Norton said. "I'm excited for the kids. In the offseason, the
kids put in the time on Saturdays. They have worked so hard."
Ty
Minkin led Stagg with 12 carries for 165 yards and two touchdowns. He
scored on runs of 19 and 45 yards and had a 59-yard touchdown called
back with a holding penalty.
Bear Creek (1-3)
went up 7-6 with 10 minutes, 24 seconds left in the second quarter,
when Stagg scored three unanswered touchdowns before halftime.
The
Delta Kings went up for good on Minkin's first score. He looked stopped
on a run to the right, but cut across field for a touchdown.
"He's probably one of the fastest guys in the area," Norton said. "We emphasized getting him back on track tonight."
Fellow
senior running back Theo Wofford scored twice before the break on a
50-yard run on a fake punt and later on a 57-yard pass from Aaron Raya.
Raya
completed 8 of 14 passes for 190 yards. He also ran four times for 8
yards and a touchdown. Wofford caught five passes for 119 yards and
rushed five times for 81 yards.
"We have some quality running backs and they turned it on tonight," Norton said.
"It was just a matter of time until one of them busts out."
Bear
Creek recovered three turnovers in the first half, but was constantly
pressured at the line of scrimmage. The Bruins had 32 yards of offense
at halftime.
Bear Creek's touchdown was on a 5-yard run by Royce Long. Long had 11 carries for 13 yards.
Jack Phouminavong led the Bruins with 36 yards on 11 carries.
