Collin Rhoads faked a handoff and ran untouched into the end zone and
for a moment it looked like Lodi had come from behind to tie Stagg at
27-all with 2:41 left to go in Friday night's non-league football
showdown.
But,
then there it was — a yellow flag sitting at the 5-yard line. Rhoads'
2-point conversion was called back for holding and Stagg hung on,
handing the Flames a 27-25 loss in their homecoming game.
"One call — It changed the whole game," said Lodi running back Jordan
Perkins, who rushed for 209 yards in his biggest game of the season so
far.
The Flames dropped to 0-3 on the season while Stagg improved to 3-0.
Lodi's
offense found itself for the first time this season on the legs of
Perkins. He broke loose for a 48-yard dash at the end of the first
quarter and kept rolling from there. He finished with three touchdowns
on 24 carries, while Rhoads completed 9-of-13 passes for 101 yards and
a touchdown for the Flames.
While the Flame defense came up with
a handful of stops, it couldn't contain Stagg quarterback Aaron Raya,
who connected on 15-of-25 attempts for 237 yards and two touchdowns, or
running back Theo Wofford, who rushed for 109 yards, including 60 on
Stagg's game-winning drive in the fourth quarter.
Stagg also ran
all over Lodi's special teams, with Wofford eating up yards on kickoffs
and punt returns and helping the Delta Kings begin six of their 10
possessions in Lodi territory.
"The offense did better, we just
need to make plays on both sides of the ball — defensively and in the
kicking game," Lodi head coach Todd Dillon said. "That was rough. It's
hard to overcome that (Stagg's field position throughout the game)."
After
taking a 13-13 tie into halftime, Stagg's offense came out charging in
the second half. With Raya completing passes and Wofford raking up
first downs, Stagg took at 27-19 lead with 6:43 left in the game.
Rhoads then orchestrated a 72-yard drive, hitting Damien Fernandez and
Kenyata Beck for big gains, before Perkins stumbled into the end zone
on a 7-yard run with 2:41 left. Rhoads ran in the first 2-point
conversion to tie the game, but it was called back on a holding
penalty. From the 11-yard line, the snap was high and Rhoads bobbled it
before being taken down just inside the 10-yard line.
On
the ensuing drive, Lodi stopped Stagg, which had 13 penalties for over
130 yards, but Rhoads' last-chance pass with 12 seconds left was picked
off.
The Flames were forced to play without running back/safety
Alex Santiago and halfback and defensive back Nick Brown, who faced
disciplinary action for violating school rules and won't return to the
team this season.
