STOCKTON RECORD - 9-1 Stagg stuck with No. 7 seed

Stagg High got its home playoff game, but it comes with a somewhat surprising seed.

The No. 7 Delta Kings host No. 10 Elk Grove-Pleasant Grove in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I football playoffs at 7 p.m. Friday. It will be the first playoff game played in Stagg's stadium, which opened for the 2010 season.

Stagg completed a 9-1 regular season with a 59-0 win over West. Last year, 10 of the 11 large-school teams with nine regular-season victories earned a top-four seed, meaning they were assured a home game in the second round if they advanced out of the first.

But when the section released its football playoff brackets Saturday, the Delta Kings - who were No. 5 without any adjustments to the brackets - were dropped to No. 7.

That seeding puts them in a tough game with the Eagles (6-4), who play in the brutal Delta River League, a conference loaded with football powerhouses. Pleasant Grove finished third behind Folsom (10-0) and Oak Ridge (9-1).

The brackets are based on overall wins without regard to conference record, but there is a gross-injustice clause for teams like No. 5 Granite Bay, the defending Division I section champion. The Grizzlies finished 7-3 but played a nonleague schedule laden with perennial state powers, and they also won the Sierra Foothill League. No. 6 Pitman (8-2) also skipped ahead of the Delta Kings.

"I'm surprised at how they turned out," Stagg coach Don Norton said. "Disappointed? No, we're just happy to be in the playoffs and we're happy to be hosting a (first-round) game. There's not much we can do about it."

The top four teams in Division I each had at least nine wins and finished ahead of Stagg using the strength-of-schedule tiebreaker, so while the subjective gross-injustice clause affected the Delta Kings' seed, it did not cost them a second-round home game. Also, before any adjustments were made, Stagg was lined up to play Pleasant Grove. Both teams' seedings were moved to keep the first-round matchup intact.

STOCKTON RECORD - Merriweather looks to keep players on right path
Posted by webmaster on Sunday, November 04 @ 00:54:10 EDT (250 reads)
News

STOCKTON - The players on the Stagg High varsity football team weren't yet born when former Pacific and NFL linebacker Michael Merriweather wreaked havoc on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

But his message to the Delta Kings inside their weight room following practice Thursday transcended time.

"I believe life rewards good behavior," said Merriweather, a standout linebacker for the Tigers from 1978-81 and a three-time Pro Bowl selection in an 11-year NFL career with the Steelers, Vikings, Jets and Packers. "Go to school. Get good grades. Do what you're supposed to do. What you do on and off the field follows you."

Merriweather was invited to speak by San Joaquin Valley Youth For Christ/Point Break Adolescent Resources, which works primarily with at-risk youth in San Joaquin County.

"We brought Mike in to give a pep talk and let the kids know what they need to do to be successful," said Vickie Trigerous, who works with the organization.

Merriweather has been a longtime supporter of community causes and said he was glad to talk to the players.

"I always try to be there to help," said the 51-year-old Merriweather, an insurance broker and Stockton resident. "People were always there for me all the time."

Merriweather played a portion of an NFL Films highlights package from the Steelers 1984 season, in which he had 15 sacks, to the group before he spoke about the commitment he made to do his best in the classroom and while competing in four sports at Vallejo High. He spoke about his career at Pacific, which led to him being drafted by the Steelers in the third round in 1982, and how training and competing against his NFL teammates made him a better player.

Davon Gillum, a starting junior inside linebacker and running back for Stagg who used to live in Vallejo, said Merriweather's speech resonated with him.

"It means a lot knowing he came from the same place as me and that all you have to do is work hard and you can make it," Gillum said.

Delta Kings coach Don Norton said it never hurts for kids to hear positive messages.

"That was outstanding," said Norton, whose team is 8-1 overall and 3-1 in the Tri-City Athletic League with its regular-season finale Friday against West.

"The kids that take this stuff seriously always get something out of this kind of talk."

STOCKTON RECORD - STAGG 33, TOKAY 16 - Stagg beats Tokay, remains unbeaten
Posted by webmaster on Saturday, October 20 @ 10:08:12 EDT (299 reads)
News
This one is going to sting for Tokay. In a span of three plays on Friday night, Stagg swiped momentum at the Grape Bowl and put the feisty Tigers' playoff aspirations on hold.

Tokay had clamped down on the Delta Kings' explosive attack - and, early in the fourth, finally found an offensive rhythm of its own. Down 19-16 and moving into the red zone, the Tigers had its chance to pounce with 10 minutes left. That's when everything changed.

A sack. An interception. And then an ensuing touchdown, as the Delta Kings' Lester Williams took a simple swing pass, broke through tackles and tight-roped the sideline 68 yards. Stagg upped its lead to 26-16, eventually sealing a 33-16 win.

"We should have had it," said Tokay coach Louis Franklin, whose team surrendered 20 unanswered points to lose a 16-13 second-half lead.

Indeed, the Tigers (6-2, 1-2 Tri-City Athletic League) will see critical errors that derailed an inspired defensive performance - an effort that held Stagg 12 points below its season scoring average.

Tokay picked off Delta Kings quarterback Wayne Brooks twice on the night, and forced a safety in the first half to go into the locker room down 13-9.

The Tigers went ahead in the third after Travis Dart intercepted Brooks near midfield. Fullback Bryson Schreiner, who rumbled for 97 yards on 20 carries and had a 90-yard kickoff return touchdown, pounded his way up the middle to set up Kelse DePauli-Wiltse's go-ahead sneak.

But Tokay's offense would gain little traction outside of Schreiner's hard running. DePauli-Wiltse Hodges in the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, the Delta Kings (8-0, 3-0 TCAL) made big plays when it mattered. Brooksfinished 8-of-15 passing for 121 yards and three touchdowns, adding 50 yards and a score on the ground. Wideout Andre Lindsey, who caught a 10-yard TD in the second quarter, gave Stagg its 19-16 lead on a 25-yard fly sweep.

"Lester and Andre are just special football players, and our offensive line did a heck of a job in front of them," said Delta Kings coach Don Norton, whose team faces St. Mary's next week to decide the league title.

LODI NEWS SENTINEL - Tigers hang tough, but trumped by Delta Kings

News

This one is going to sting for Tokay. In a span of three plays on Friday night, the Stagg Delta Kings swiped momentum at the Grape Bowl and put the feisty Tigers’ football playoff aspirations on hold.

Tokay had clamped down on the Delta Kings’ explosive attack — and, early in the fourth, finally found an offensive rhythm of its own. Down 19-16 and moving into the red zone, the Tigers had their chance to pounce with 10 minutes left.

That’s when everything changed.

A sack. An interception. And then an ensuing touchdown, as the Delta Kings’ Lester Williams took a simple swing pass, broke through tackles and tight-roped the sideline 68 yards. Stagg upped its lead to 26-16, eventually stealing a 33-16 win.

“We should have had it,” said Tokay coach Louis Franklin, whose team surrendered 20 unanswered points to lose a 16-13 second-half lead. “The problem was sudden-change opportunities and mistakes. The most frustrating part is going to be when we watch tape tomorrow.”

Indeed, the Tigers (6-2, 1-2 Tri-City Athletic League) will see critical errors that derailed an inspired defensive performance — an effort that held Stagg 12 points below its season scoring average. Tokay picked off Delta Kings quarterback Wayne Brooks twice on the night, and forced a safety in the first half to go into the locker room down 13-9.

The Tigers went ahead in the third after Travis Dart intercepted Brooks near midfield.

Fullback Bryson Schreiner, who rumbled for 97 yards on 20 carries and had a 90-yard kickoff return touchdown, pounded his way up the middle to set up Kelse DePauli-Wiltse’s go-ahead sneak.

But Tokay’s offense would gain little traction outside of Schreiner’s hard running. DePauli-Wiltse was 7-of-15 for 81 yards, but threw three interceptions, including the back-breaker to Ricky Hodges in the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, the Delta Kings (8-0, 3-0 TCAL) made big plays when it mattered. Brooks finished 8-of-15 passing for 121 yards and three touchdowns, adding 50 yards and a score on the ground.

Wideout Andre Lindsey, who caught a 10-yard TD in the second quarter, gave Stagg its 19-16 lead on a 25-yard fly sweep.

“Lester and Andre are just special football players, and our offensive line did a heck of a job in front of them,” said Delta Kings coach Don Norton, whose team faces St. Mary’s next week to decide the league title.

“We had a hard time from keeping (Tokay) from jumping ahead. They’re a well-coached team and gave us all we can handle tonight.”

STOCKTON RECORD - Tokay to match speed with speed
Posted by webmaster on Saturday, October 20 @ 10:05:25 EDT (338 reads)

LODI - Tokay fullback Bryson Schreiner is a sprinter on the Tigers track team in the spring.

West High can attest to Schreiner's speed on the football field after watching the senior return the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown and amass 275 all-purpose yards with three touchdowns in Tokay's record-setting 62-17 win over the Wolf Pack last week.

Today, Schreiner won't be the only player on the field with track experience, as Stagg has several players on its football squad who double as sprinters in the spring. For Tokay (6-1, 1-1 Tri-City Athletic League) to have any chance of upsetting the Delta Kings (7-0, 2-0) in a big TCAL game that kicks off at 7:15 p.m. at the Grape Bowl, Schreiner has to come through with some big plays against a good Stagg defense. The Tigers also would do well to sustain some drives to keep the Delta Kings' potent offense off the field.

It's a tall order, and Schreiner knows it.

"I definitely think it's going to be mostly an offensive game," said Schreiner, who has rushed for 525 yards and six touchdowns on 61 carries and has caught 11 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns. "We're able to drive the ball pretty well on offense. It should be a big-play team versus a driving team."

In Schreiner, Tigers coach Louis Franklin has a back capable not only of getting tough yards to sustain drives but one who can score any time he touches the ball. Schreiner didn't play football last season and instead concentrated on track. But this being his senior year, Schreiner wanted to be a part of the football team with his friends. Franklin is glad to have him.

"We have that guy that if we block correctly, we can get six points, whereas in the past you might get 15, 20 yards and have to do it again," said Franklin, whose team set the school's single-game scoring mark last week. "So with him, we have that explosive piece we haven't had for quite a while."

Schreiner had an 80-yard run against Bear Creek, a 70-yard run against El Dorado-Placerville and a 26-yard run and 133 yards against rival Lodi. Schreiner isn't the only weapon at Franklin's disposal. Junior quarterback Kelse DePauli-Wiltse has thrown 10 touchdowns and only one interception, senior Clark Hunter has run for 375 yards and eight touchdowns, and senior Gary Norwood has 252 yards receiving and five touchdowns.

"If everyone does their job, every play has the potential to be a touchdown," Schreiner said.

That won't be easy against a Stagg defense that has three shutouts to its credit and allows just 14 points per game - though Manteca scored 47 points in Week 3 and McNair had 29 last week. The Delta Kings have outscored their opponents by an average of 31 points.

"I know a lot of people aren't giving us much of a chance, and that's fine," Franklin said. "We'll take that underdog role. We haven't won some big games here in a while. We're excited we get to play in a big game because that means we're doing things right. We're excited we get the opportunity to play a team as good as Stagg."
